Ever wondered why body builders are so ripped despite doing very little in terms of cardio? I know what you are thinking and no, not all their 'gains' comes down to a calorie restrictive diet.
Body builders actually need both a diet and training plan to get them in to shape. Since they have really nailed these modalities, perhaps we can learn a thing or two from their practices when it comes to achieving sustainable weight loss.
When we train with weights we are building muscle. When we build muscle we are putting our body into an anabolic state. When honing in on weight loss for weight training, it's all about boosting our basal metabolic rate. Therefore, when we are anabolic, we literally expend more calories at rest and exercise than someone who does not partake in a weight training program OR someone who doesn't train consistently enough in the weights room Vs someone who diligently trains 3x per week.
So when clients suggest they will just do cardio and a calorie restrictive for weight-loss? Ok go ahead, but if I've got more muscle than you, i will expend more calories than you for exactly the same workout. Yes, you guessed it, In essence I am making my body more calorie deficient by including weight training in my training program.
Besides the above, there are a myriad of reasons why you need to double down on weight training as part of your program.
For example, ageing can literally make you weaker if you don't take ownership of it. This is because, as you age muscles atrophy. Including a sound lifting program into your lifestyle is an essential way to keep you looking good but also enabling you to stay strong from the inside to outside.
When many clients who ask for weight loss during their goal setting session, actually also mean they want to improve their body shape. For the record, technically muscle does not weigh more than fat. Muscles simply take up less room than fat in the body, therefore when boosting muscle and reducing fat with regular weight training your body shape improves fourfold. Looking at endurance athletes Vs cross fit athletes clarifies why weight training makes you look better.
In a nutshell, if you are indeed serious about weight loss, you can not avoid doing a weight training program, no matter how many spin classes you want to do for weight loss. If you know me, youll know I love teaching spin and I also love weights. There is a very good reason for that.. Best results spring to mind! Take this advice and run with it, especially if you don't want to be running like a half broken hamster on the wheel. When it comes to weight loss and for life itself pick the iron up. (The right kind of iron) and pick it up regularly enough to boost your metabolism, get you in to great shape plus maximise your health and vitality.
Consistency is key.
